Love drives out fear

1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.”

If we don’t know, truly know, the God of love, we WILL fear, because we will see all correction as punishment. If we don’t know the heart of God, if we don’t know and understand His love, we will not trust His heart. We won’t see that the temporary pain and trials we go through are for an ultimate purpose and for our good. We won’t understand that temporary pain brings freedom and that the removal of sin, though painful, uncomfortable, and difficult, is necessary! Christ underwent temporary pain so that we might have an ETERNAL salvation!

Hebrews 12:6-11 “because the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son.Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline),then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spiritsand live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

He isn’t a cruel God. He’s a loving God who sees the big picture and who knows that the pain required to refine us can’t come close to the eternal weight of glory that awaits us.

Romans 8:18 “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

With this in mind, we can trust God, and we can trust His heart. We can know that when He takes things out of our lives, it is not out of maliciousness but in love. He cares more about the state of our hearts than our temporary comfort. When things don’t go quite as planned, we can rest easy knowing that He is in control, because His perfect love casts out fear.
